We have a diverse portfolio of applications. So far, our cloud projects have been doing very well. We'd like to move as much as possible into the cloud. How should we start preparing our oldest, most critical applications for migrating to the cloud?
You should start looking at taking your oldest, most critical applications to the cloud in a manner that provides economies of scale. It sounds as if you are using the strategy of seeking out the easiest and the most obvious applications first, which is good. It makes sense to save the difficult and costly projects for last.
Over the last few years, advancements in cloud have made it an ideal way to take advantage of the latest and greatest technologies. However, not all legacy applications can be moved to the cloud. The first step is to find out whether your cloud provider can support your application as-is or whether the application will need upgrades before you migrate it to the cloud. This is a technical question best discussed with your provider on an application-by-application basis.
With companies hosting hundreds or thousands of applications, CIOs must take advantage of the economies of scale that cloud computing delivers. You should not question whether your application can live in the cloud, but instead should look at leveraging the technological advances that are available in infrastructure-, platform- or software as a service. In addition, you will want to look at whether you want to go with a public, private or hybrid solution.
Cloud security still remains a concern for migrating mission-critical applications to the cloud. Other concerns include access to the data, disaster recovery, failover and redundancy, service-level agreements, and access to technical support resources when required. As the cloud evolves, so will the concerns IT teams will have about mission-critical applications and migrating to the cloud.
