You need a model to test embedded systems, simply because they are state-driven and have entities that are interdependent. A simple way to build this model is to use an Excel file with the columns of State/Screen, Functions in that screen, Fields in that screen, the Action of each function and the Expected Response.

This model is then used by an automated testing script that reads a "test sequence" to call the required function using the model table. The script then checks that the response is as in the expected response column.
